So I'm kind of keeping it simple this week with a little life/home update. I figured, if you guys are anything like me, you love snooping through people's houses (is it bad for me to admit that?). And although my house is still a definite work in progress, I thought it would be fun to show you some of the changes we've made recently.
In case you haven't checked out my post where I talked about buying our first house, (you can check it out here) here's a picture of what the dinning room area sort of looked like when we moved in.
The dining room (slash family room? it's kind of an awkward space) was painted a lovely shade of pepto bismal pink (and I'm thoroughly convinced the back of my kitchen cupboard was a matching shade of pink at one point) and for some odd reason, the dining table sat right next to the kitchen counter top.
It's easy to move a table so that wasn't a big deal but the real pain the butt was where they installed a hanging light.
Now in the rush of the first week of us moving in, and after already removing three chandeliers (no that's not a typo...there were three different chandeliers down the hallway), we weren't totally sure what to do with this light, knowing we eventually wanted a dinning table light, just in a different place. So we moved the table, figuring we'd decide on the lighting situation later. But I'm a dork and kept hitting my head off the light because apparently I don't have depth perception or something. The second time I hit my head pretty hard, tears accidentally came and my cousin quickly remedied the situation but using a scrap wire to lift the light up out of the way.
And then here we were, a year later, with funky chandelier still strapped oddly to the ceiling.
Top left is that lovely light, strung up on a wire, looking awkward as ever.
We had always intended to find a more permanent solution later, when we figured out exactly where we wanted a new light to go in that room, but you know how life goes, a year had passed and I still had that eye sore of a light, hanging by a wire, hovering above empty space.
And one day it just hit me, there's gotta be a cheap light that we could buy to replace that chandelier for the time being (and act as a much better band aid than a chunk of wire). So a quick trip to Home Depot and ten dollars later, my amazing hubby was up on a chair, installing my new light!
I apologize in advance for the quality of these photos. It was 8 o clock at night and we were too excited to get that new light up to wait for good picture lighting! ;)
This is the moment my jaw dropped at how much of a difference getting rid of that light made.
And here's what it looks like today.
It's nothing fancy but wow does my house feel so much better with just that little fix.
This right here, my friends, is where a lot of my instagram magic takes place. Right by that window and in that exact chair. Lighting is superb first thing in the morning. Just in case any of you were wondering ha ha.
This little update has encouraged me to start fixing the little things, even if it's not our end goal ideal solution of what we want the house to look like. For example, take a look at that sad exposed wood under our counter top. I was going to wait to paint that until I could sand down all the cupboards in my kitchen (sooo many layers of paint with heavy heavy brush strokes) and paint it all at the same time (plus Jake wants to get fancy with trim) but now I'm like what the heck am I thinking? Who knows when I'll have the time/money to take on that major of a project of redoing the whole kitchen. So you betcha I'll be shopping for a little can of white paint this weekend. And I guarantee it's going to be such a refreshing change, just like getting rid of that chandelier was. Oh and in case you were curious why that wood is exposed, that lovely checkered carpet (heavy sarcasm) once went up the bar for some strange reason. Yeah ripping that off was one of the first things I begged Jake to do.
And you guys, the other major change that happened this last week in our house is that we got a new couch! Well it's new to us. We have the absolute most amazing, sweet, kind hearted neighbors who are always taking such good care of us (and spoiling us rotten) and this last week, they came by asking if we wanted a leather couch that they were getting rid of.
I was so excited because we had been making do with a couch that had been left here from the previous home owner (which looked nice enough but there were questionable stains I could never quite get rid of) so a leather couch sounded absolutely dreamy (and oh so fancy). I went to take a peek at what it looked like and I smiled so big when I realized it looked so similar to the same couch that Jake and I had bought right after I graduated from college. They both were brown, kind of the same shape, and had little studs on the arm rests and I just thought that was the neatest thing ever.
Now I've put this off for a while, sharing pictures of the inside of my home, mainly because I feel like my house isn't that fancy (I see all you cute ladies with your magazine worthy homes posting to pinterest and instagram all the time) but I just keep reminding myself that so what if my house is a little plain jane at the moment, this is my story and where I'm at in life, so without further ado, here's my little living room reveal.
Oh but real quick! You gotta see what it looked like before when we first moved in.
(It's so crazy seeing what our house used to look like.)
And here's where we are at currently.
There's my new couch guys!! Isn't she so pretty?
(I can't believe how off center that chandelier is...)
I've already bought some cute little couch pillows to help bring some homey-ness to this room and as you can see, I kind of have no idea what to put on the walls...especially since with the wall that our new leather couch is in front of, we are planning on knocking some or all of it down sometime hopefully next year (and getting new laminate flooring through the whole house! Gosh I can't wait! Goodbye scary, ripply, crinkly sounding carpet from the 70's! Hello beautiful wood flooring!). My dinning room is behind that wall and I just think it'd make such a difference to have one big open, useable space instead of the two kind of awkward/cramped rooms we have right now.
And this little beauty I found on craigslist for a steal of a deal and bought from the sweetest older gentleman ever. Now my record player and my little record collection have a new home! Aaand my mom just gave me her old vinyl collection that included legit vintage Disney albums of Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book! (Be still my heart!) I think it's safe to say that this very well could be the best week ever.
(Anyone notice my sweet Lexi photo bombing in the bottom corner?)
Someday I'll get brave enough to share the rest of the house because man there's been major projects in almost each room. But for now, I'm just going to enjoy my new couch and my clean living room.
Real quick I just want to thank you guys. You are always so kind to me and I hope you know how much I appreciate it! Hope you all are having a fabulous week!
